چکیده

In the context of intelligent transportation, this paper presents a novel on-line trajectorygeneration method for autonomous lane changing. The proposed scheme is guidance based, realtime applicable, and ensures safety and passenger ride comfort. Based on the principles of Rendezvous Guidance, the passing vehicle is guided in real-time to match the position and velocity of a shadow target (i.e., rendezvous with) during the overtaking manoeuvre. The shadow target’s position and velocity are generated based on real-time sensory information gathered about the slower vehicle ahead of the passing vehicle as well as other vehicles which may be travelling in the passing lane. Namely, the guidance principle is also used to prevent any potential collision with these obstacle vehicles. The proposed method can be used as a fully autonomous system or simply as a driver-assistance tool. Extensive simulations and experiments, some of which are presented herein, clearly demonstrate the tangible efficiency of the proposed method.

Motion Planning of Autonomous Vehicles on a Dual Carriageway without Speed Lanes

The problem of motion planning of an autonomous vehicle amidst other vehicles on a straight road is considered. Traffic in a number of countries is unorganized, where the vehicles do not move within predefined speed lanes. In this paper, we formulate a mechanism wherein an autonomous vehicle may travel on the ―wrong‖ side in order to overtake a vehicle. Challenges include assessing a possible o...

Modeling and Intelligent Control System Design for Overtaking Maneuver in Autonomous Vehicles

The purpose of this study is to design an intelligent control system to guide the overtaking maneuver with a higher performance than the existing systems. Unlike the existing models which consider constant values for some of the effective variables of this behavior, in this paper, a neural network model is designed based on the real overtaking data using instantaneous values for variables. A fu...

On-Road Trajectory Planning for General Autonomous Driving with Enhanced Tunability

In order to achieve smooth autonomous driving in real-life urban and highway environments, a motion planner must generate trajectories that are locally smooth and responsive (reactive), and at the same time, far-sighted and intelligent (deliberative). Prior approaches achieved both planning qualities for full-speed-range operations at a high computational cost. Moreover, the planning formulatio...

Masters Thesis: Steering controller identification and design for human-like overtaking

DAVI project, which is the abbreviation for Dutch Automated Vehicle Initiative, aims to explore, improve and demonstrate automated driving on public roads. The ultimate goal of the project is to achieve a full autonomous vehicle without any driver, but only users on it. Compared with traditional human driving, automated driving is an appealing topic due to its advantages of enhancing road safet...

Robust Motion Planning Using a Maneuver Automaton with Built-in Uncertainties

In this paper, we extend a recently introduced motion planning framework for autonomous vehicles based on a maneuver automaton representation of the vehicle dynamics. We bring robustness into the guidance system by accounting for the uncertainties in the motion primitives used by the maneuver automaton. The uncertainties are taken into account in the offline computation of a guidance function, ...
